The Woodlands — A Private 74 Acre Retreat In Great Barrington!

A rare opportunity to own a private and picturesque Berkshire retreat in the heart of Great Barrington. Set on seventy-four acres of meadow, orchard, and forest, The Woodlands offers a refuge of uncommon scale and serenity—just two minutes from Ski Butternut and five minutes to downtown Great Barrington’s restaurants, shops, and cultural life. The property abuts the Thomas and Palmer Brook Reserve, a Berkshire Natural Resources Council preserve spanning more than 300 acres of protected woodland and scenic trails, extending your own land into a vast network of wild beauty. A long, tree-lined drive winds through open fields to a light-filled contemporary five-bedroom, three-bath residence beside a tranquil pond that feeds a gently babbling brook. Inside, the home is defined by warmth, craftsmanship, and a connection to its surroundings. The living, dining, and kitchen areas flow together in an open layout that serves as the home’s central gathering space, bright and welcoming, with large windows framing trees and sky. The living room’s stone fireplace anchors the space, while the dining area, surrounded by windows on two sides, invites relaxed meals and conversation. The kitchen blends natural wood cabinetry with granite counters and subtle updates, maintaining the home’s organic character. A broad entertaining deck extends from the great room and overlooks the pond and seasonal brook. The primary suite occupies its own private wing of the first floor, completely separate from guest spaces. Expansive windows frame the pond and meadow, creating a quiet space immersed in nature. The en suite bath features double vanities and a soaking tub positioned before a picture window overlooking the landscape. Upstairs, a cathedral-ceiling family room provides a bright, flexible living area for movies, games, or creative pursuits. Three bedrooms and a full bath open directly from this space, creating an ideal guest or family zone. A large office, lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, extends from this level as well, offering views, a generous work area, and a loft above for storage or a potential fun space. Extra amenities include walk-in climate-controlled wine storage, a dedicated ski and boot room, golf-bag and gear storage, a professional darkroom, and parking for four vehicles under the house plus a detached lower-property garage for equipment or hobby use. Beyond the open fields, the property’s back acreage unfolds in a mix of mature forest and gently rising terrain. An old logging road winds through the woods still visible and easily reopened as a private trail for hiking, snowshoeing, or quiet walks in every season. At the ridge crest, a hand-laid stone wall marks a peaceful resting point and potential site for a small off-grid cabin or retreat. The land also connects to the Thomas and Palmer Brook Reserve, offering access to approximately two miles of preserved woodland trails right from the property. And when winter arrives, the gentle slope at the front of the house offers a perfect sledding hill for cold-weather play. Whether envisioned as a year-round residence, four-season getaway, or multi-generation retreat, The Woodlands combines beauty, privacy, and proximity in a way few Berkshire properties can. The ultimate private Berkshire escape, minutes from everything, yet a world apart.
